Pressure-treated or composite? The honest sheet.
Every deck estimate comes with this question, so here is the answer we give at the kitchen table. Neither one is wrong. They are for different budgets and different plans.
| Criteria | A Treated wood | B Composite |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Lower. The budget choice for the same size and layout. | Higher on day one, usually a third to a half more. |
| Lifespan | 10 to 15 years, longer if it is stained on schedule. | 25 years and up. The boards outlast the frame under them. |
| Upkeep | Stain or seal every 2 to 3 years, or it greys and checks. | Soap and water. No sanding, no staining, ever. |
| Look | Real wood grain. Warms with age, greys if left alone. | Keeps its color. Grain pattern is embossed, many colors. |
| In the summer sun | Stays cooler underfoot. | Darker colors get warm. Lighter colors are fine. |
| Choose it if | You want the lowest number now, or you like the ritual of staining. | You plan to stay ten years or more and never want to touch it again. |
The frame is the same under both: pressure-treated lumber on frost-depth footings. What you choose is the surface you see and the years of upkeep you sign up for. See the deck chapter.
The visit
Blackstone · Decks & Concrete
What happens after you call
The estimate is a visit, not a phone call. It is also where most of the good ideas come from, because it is easier to design a deck standing in the yard than from a form.
- 01
An owner comes to the house
Not a phone quote. We walk the yard or the driveway with you, measure it, and look at what is there now.
- 02
Ideas at the kitchen table
Where the stairs should land, whether a patio beats a deck on your lot, which rail shows the yard. This is the part people thank us for.
- 03
Everything in writing
Material, size, permit, dates. A scope you can hold next to any other quote and compare line by line.
- 04
Built by the people you met
The owners are on site. The crew grows for big jobs, but the people you talked to are the people running it.
Two cousins, more than 11 years on the tools, one family business. Read how the company came to be.
If something we built is not right, we come back and fix it.

Questions
Blackstone · Decks & Concrete
The six things everyone asks
-
How long does a deck take to build?
Most simple decks are three to five days on site once the materials are delivered. Covered decks and multi-level layouts run longer. If your township needs a permit, that review comes first and can take from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.
-
How long until I can use new concrete?
Walk on it after a day or two. Furniture on a patio after a week. Park on a driveway after seven days, and keep heavy trucks off for the full 28-day cure.
-
Pressure-treated or composite?
Treated wood costs less now and needs staining every two or three years. Composite costs more now and needs nothing. If you plan to stay in the house ten years or more, composite usually wins on total cost. The full comparison is on this page under Materials.
-
Do I need a permit?
Decks over 30 inches off the ground and anything with a roof almost always do. Public sidewalk work in Philadelphia needs a Streets Department permit. Patios and most repairs usually do not. We tell you what applies to your address at the estimate.
-
What does "add to my list" do?
It works like circling things in a printed catalog. Mark the services you are thinking about as you browse, and when you send the estimate form the list comes with it, so the conversation at your house starts from what you already want.
-
Which areas do you cover?
Philadelphia and the surrounding counties, South Jersey (Cherry Hill, Bensalem and the towns around them) and northern Delaware around Wilmington. Roughly 40 miles from the city in any direction. If you are not sure, call or text and we will tell you in a minute.
